Cameras, their functions and all their accessories can be overwhelming if you’re not already familiar with them. Learn how to use your camera to capture moments, events, and people in your everyday life.

The class will cover a range of technical aspects, including aperture, shutter speed and ISO, amongst other photography principles. You’ll also cover focal length and lenses, lighting and correct exposure.

This class takes you on a walking tour around Melbourne, beginning at Federation Square, so you can practise in different surroundings. By the end of the class, you’ll have the confidence to apply your new skills in a variety of situations.

Your experience doesn’t stop once the class ends - you can share your photos with your peers on the Melbourne Photography Facebook Group and there's also a Beginners Photographers Facebook Group where members can exchange photography tips, ask questions and receive constructive criticism on photos.

Participants are required to bring the following to the class:
Digital camera that has a manual settings option
Fully charged batteries (and spares if possible)
Blank image cards (two or more, formatted if possible)
Camera manual

Class sizes are kept small so each participant will have a chance to interact with the host on a one-to-one basis. There will be a substantial amount of walking involved on the day, so please wear comfortable shoes and bring an umbrella or a hat should the weather call for it.

Let Melbourne Photography Group help you create beautiful moments with every click of the shutter.

Fantastic. I’ve done other beginner classes and still not known how to operate my camera. I finally feel like I know what I’m doing. I was about to give up on my camera due to frustration- not now. I appreciated how the focus was on using the camera, less so on composition. Everything was explained well and we were given time to practice as well as feedback on if we’d understood the lesson. Laura was great at explaining, encouraging and patient. Thank you!

I thought the information taught was useful and well presented. We were given time to practise the skills and the small group size lent itself to the facilitator to individually assist everyone. She spoke clearly and had a great friendly manner.

Throughly enjoyed the time we spent with Matt and learnt lots in 3 hours. As a beginner, the course was pitched perfectly. Loved the location at the Shrine, as it gave us lots of great aspects to try out our new skills. I would highly recommend this course to anyone as a beginner who wants to improve the quality of taking photos and understand the manual settings to get to know the functionality of the camera better. Thanks Matt, looking forward to booking the next course with you.

It was a great introduction to using the camera on manual. I also liked learning about f stops, aperture, white balance, ISO and exposure compensation, as well as shutter speed. Steph explained things clearly and we were lucky that there were only 4 of us in the group.
